Winter Gritting
Winter gritting is a term used by councils and private companies, which describes the service of salting the roads and pathways when the weather predicts icy, sleet or snowy conditions.
It is also important to be aware that road surfaces can become frozen even when the temperature doesn’t feel very cold, this is because road temperatures can be four degrees colder than the air temperature.
It is the County Council’s responsibility to keep the main roads safe in poor weather conditions. So when winter temperatures hover around freezing point and dip below, the gritting lorries are sent out to salt roads, which help to prevent ice forming and helps in the reduction of accidents.
